DISEASES AND CONDITIONS THAT AFFECT THE BREED

&

PRE-BREEDING DNA HEALTH TESTS

The purpose of this page is to give you, as a current or potential Staffordshire Bull Terrier owner a summary of the main conditions/diseases that affect the breed, plus how responsible breeders can test for these conditions/diseases prior to breeding to ensure the health of their litters, and your future family member.

Within each condition/disease summary, we have provided a link to the website we referenced this information from, should you wish to do your own further research or go straight to the source.

This page is divided into two sections

  • Genetic Conditions that can be screened for by DNA testing
  • Eye Conditions that can be screened for by a Veterinary Ophthalmology Specialist (Vet who specialises in eyes)

If you have any further questions after reading this page, please feel free to post within our Facebook group or use the Contact Us form.

There are a few other conditions such as Hip Dysplasia, Elbow Dysplasia and Luxating Patellar. We will cover these off when there is a bit more information around these specific to Staffordshire Bull Terriers. But for now, if you would like some information on these conditions, please feel free to contact a committee member or a member of the admin team.
